Jennifer Lopez’s Style Through the Years

J. Lo has been serving fierce, bold looks since 1986. Including the green Versace dress.

Where were you the first time Jennifer Lopez came into your life?

Was it while she was dancing on “In Living Color” in the ’80s? Or perhaps when she played Selena Quintanilla-Pérez in the 1997 biopic of the artist’s life? Maybe it was when “Waiting for Tonight” hit the charts in 1999? Or when Ms. Lopez stole rom-com lovers’ hearts in the early aughts as the leading lady in “The Wedding Planner” and “Maid in Manhattan?”

Jennifer Lopez has been icon for more than three decades. She is also the first Latina actor to earn over $1 million for a film and the first woman to have a No. 1 album and a No. 1 movie in the same week. And don’t forget about her Golden Globe nomination.

So it’s fitting that Ms. Lopez just received this year’s Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, which recognizes career-spanning accomplishments in music and film.

When she took the stage tonight at the VMAs, she reminded everyone that she has staying power. She began the medley of her biggest hits in a flowing blue and gold Versace cape over a gold leotard with thigh straps. She later donned a floor-length white fur coat and ended the performance in baggy gold pants — the same outfit she accepted her award in.

To honor her, let’s remember some of her looks.

The Romper

Before rompers were everywhere, and for everyone, Ms. Lopez wore this silky one piece to the VH1 “Vogue” awards in 2000. The award show, meant to be more cheeky than chic, was a fitting place for her to showcase her all-gold accessory game.

White Out

In the same year at the VMAs, J. Lo gave us this white and silver Sean John ensemble, and she earned a silver Moon Man to match.

Diddy Days

Nineteen years ago, also at the VMAs, Ms. Lopez blessed us with this shimmery, tasseled halter top and a leather skirt. She and Sean Combs, a.k.a P. Diddy at the time, were an item from 1999 to 2001.

The Dress that Gave Us Google Image Search

Arguably, her most iconic look came at the 2000 Grammy Awards, in the form of a plunging Versace dress. It even gave us the Google Image search function. In 2015, Eric Schmidt, then the chairman of Google, said the amount of attention the dress garnered motivated the company to create the tool. At the time, Google search results were limited to text and links. But after the dress became a most searched item, developers realized they needed to include photographs.

The Glamour of a First Lady

A fashion highlight of 2003 was the mint green Valentino dress J. Lo wore to the Oscars. This one-shoulder, sari-style gown was modeled on a dress worn by Jackie Kennedy Onassis on a visit to Cambodia in 1967.

All Glowed Up

In 2002, J. Lo launched a perfume called Glow, and it was aptly named. Here she is at the 2004 Golden Globes, glowing, in Michael Kors.

Versace on the Floor

Leave it to “Jenny from the Block” to rile up Twitter over a pair of thigh-high denim boots. She wore them with the confidence only Ms. Lopez could bring to an otherwise confounding pair of shoes.

The Businesswoman

J. Lo is more than a triple threat. She can sing, act, dance, design and of course, judge many talent shows. Ms. Lopez is a judge and executive producer on “World of Dance,” so it only makes sense that earlier this summer she looked like a boss in this leopard print dress that most of us could never rock at our day jobs.

The Influencer

Ms. Lopez was named one of the most influential people of 2018. In an essay about her influence, the actress Kerry Washington wrote: “When Jennifer left the Bronx to pursue her dreams, I would rush to finish my homework on Sunday to watch her on ‘In Living Color.’ She made me believe that you could come from where we came from and achieve whatever you imagine is possible.”

VENITA TARKA: MOTHERHOOD, BALANCING WORK AND HER PRIVATE & PROFESSIONAL LIFESTYLE

How does being a mom influence your work and career?

It makes organisation more key than ever before. And not every job is on the cards as it used to be.

Conversely, how does work influence your perspective as a mother and wife?

It makes you think about what you’re willing to sacrifice or not sacrifice to fulfil both roles to the best of your ability.

What we have heard is that motherhood is challenging, what was your most surprising moment being a mother?

Probably the moment of childbirth, when you meet the little human that you have so much love and dedication towards and you marvel at the wonders of God.

What is the biggest challenge you have faced in balancing your private life and professional life?

Trying to have any kind of social life is incredibly difficult, because after God and family, and the work…there’s little time to do anything other than to rest.

If you could share one lesson with us on motherhood, what would that be?

It’s ok to be overwhelmed and not know everything. Take your time, do research on your own child. Each individual child has different needs.

How would you define your former life, and your lifestyle now?

(Lol) a lot more selfish, less mature and ten times more spontaneous. Now most of all I do is pre-planned and prepped for.

What have you had to sacrifice as a mother?

I don’t see anything I’ve done as a sacrifice. It’s simply a blessing that has its requirements and criteria.

What is your definition of ‘Having it All’?

Being Happy and healthy emotionally, spiritually and physically and acknowledging all the ways to be thankful and appreciative of it all.

Would you stick to being a vixen or an actress?

I’m definitely more than either or those two definitions. My growth will become more evident as more time pass God willing.

How do you manage internet bully crisis?

The situation makes me quite disturbed. Honestly I’ve been on both sides of the fence. I have bullied online and have been bullied also. But I take it all with a pinch of salt, because I’m very sure of who I am and what I stand for. There will always be trolls in every aspect of life. At this point in my life I recognise it’s a horrid thing and should be minimised and regulated. The truth of the matter is there are a lot of cyber gangsters, these are people who wouldn’t dare attempt to provoke you in person and are usually quite angry or upset about their own lives. Trolling makes them feel superior for all of 5 seconds. You are only affected by what you allow to hurt you. My armour is pretty solid.

What and what should your fans expect from you in your work area?

They should expect to grow and mature along with me in all I am doing. They will want to see more and different angles of my work and I will do be absolute best to meet their demands. I would be no where without them. They’ve had me nominated 3 times this year. So I’m quite thankful.

A memorable day you will never forget?

The day my daughter arrived.

Anything you would like to share with us or your fans to know?

I love you, May God bless you all. I pray he continues to help me find ways to touch your lives. I thank you.
